Alex Singleton of Coral Springs

A teen driver from Coral Springs was busted for shining a laser pointer at a Broward Sheriff’s Office helicopter as police pursued him in Fort Lauderdale last week, records show.
Alex Singleton, 18, of 3605 Coral Springs Drive, was driving a gray 2018 Volkswagen hatchback in the 900 block of West Commercial Boulevard on May 27, near a large gathering of cars doing doughnuts, when a BSO helicopter pilot spotted his flashing, red and blue, police-style car lights, which are illegal to drive with, according to an arrest affidavit.
Numerous cars got out of Singleton’s way as he drove east on Commercial Boulevard, shining a green laser pointer at the BSO aircraft multiple times as it hovered in the sky, according to police.
A be-on-the-lookout announcement went out to police as the helicopter pursued the Volkswagen, along with Fort Lauderdale Police squad cars.
Singleton was finally stopped by police in front of a Whole foods on North Federal Highway. He admitted to shining the laser at the helicopter but said he “didn’t mean to,” according to the affidavit.
He also admitted having the red and blue flashing lights in his car but said “he only uses them for pictures and videos in a parking lot setting,” the records state.
Singleton was booked into the Broward Main Jail on charges of fleeing and eluding law enforcement, pointing a laser light at a pilot, and unlawful use of blue lights.
Records show he was released on a $5,000 bond.
