Calling all chess enthusiasts. Coral Springs is ready to “rook” your world with the upcoming Annual Mayors’ Chess Challenge and King of Coral Springs Chess tournament.
Coral Springs Mayor Scott Brook and the Coral Springs City Commission have announced that the Annual Mayors’ Chess Challenge will be held on Saturday, May 6, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Sartory Hall, 10150 NW 29th St.
The Mayors’ Chess Challenge is a popular event held in more than a dozen cities across Broward County and is open to participants of all ages and skill levels. Registration is not required, and light refreshments will be served.
Mayor Scott Brook is excited to be part of an activity that benefits the youth and encourages strategic thinking skills, creativity, and patience.
The city’s Parks and Recreation Department will also host the annual King of Coral Springs Chess tournament on Saturday, May 20, at 9 a.m. The event, in partnership with the National Scholastic Chess Foundation, will take place at the Coral Springs Charter School at 3205 N. University Dr.
The King of Chess tournament is free, but participants must pre-register online before Wednesday, May 17. The tournament is open to two age divisions: elementary school for ages 5-11 and middle and high school for ages 12-18. Lunch will be provided for all playing students. Check-in will take place from 8 a.m. to 8:30 a.m., with chess matches beginning promptly at 9 a.m.
Chess has been repeatedly shown to help develop strategic thinking skills, inspire creativity, and encourage patience. Both events are expected to be fun, challenging, and engaging for participants.
