A Coral Springs family of six is seeking help from the community after a fire ripped through their apartment last week, destroying most of their belongings and leaving them without a permanent place to stay.
Tavares Calvin, 37, said the fire broke out Wednesday, June 3, at their unit in the Sherwood on the Park apartment community at 1599 Northwest 91st Ave.
“By the grace of God, our family wasn’t home at the time,” Calvin wrote on a GoFundMe page created to help his family recover from the loss. “But we lost nearly everything; our belongings, our family memories, and our sense of security.”
“Seeing the place you call home destroyed in an instant is an unimaginable shock,” he said. “The fire has left my wife and I and our 4 children ages 9, 6, 5 and 3 displaced, and we are currently trying to replace the most basic daily essentials. Right now, our biggest needs are temporary housing, clothing, food, and basic toiletries for the family.”
Calvin said he and his family are currently relying on relatives and friends while they search for more stable housing.
“As much as we wish we could handle this on our own, the reality is that the road to recovery is long and incredibly expensive. We’re humbly reaching out to our friends, family, and the wider community for support. Your generous donations will go directly toward securing temporary housing [and] replacing essential daily items (clothing, food, and medical necessities)” and starting over.
According to Calvin, a cause of the fire has not been determined. But investigators told him the blaze apparently originated on the apartment’s patio — where a Power-Wheel motorized children’s toy vehicle powered by a rechargeable battery was located — before spreading throughout the residence. The official cause remains under investigation.
He said neighbors jumped into action after noticing smoke, but the flames spread quickly.
“We did have a bunch of neighbors trying to pull stuff off the patio,” Calvin told Coral Springs Talk. “The flames just got too big. The patio door finally blew open, and then the fire spread inside to every single room in the house.”
The family carried renters insurance, and Calvin said insurance representatives are expected to conduct their own investigation.
In the immediate aftermath of the fire, the family received assistance from the American Red Cross.
“They got us some financial support,” Calvin said. “Only a couple of hours after we contacted them, they came out.”
The aid helped the family replace basic necessities, including toiletries and medications for the children.
Calvin said management at the apartment complex indicated they would try to find another unit on the property for the family, but as of this week, he said they had not heard back about the offer.
For now, he said his family is focused on meeting day-to-day needs while planning for a longer recovery process.
