Families are invited to splash, learn, and save lives on April Pools Day.
The April Pools Day community event takes place on Saturday, April 26, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Aquatic Complex at 12441 Royal Palm Boulevard. This free, family-friendly event organized by the City of Coral Springs offers the community together an opportunity to spend a day having fun and becoming better educated on techniques and safety protocols that help prevent drowning, a silent killer and one of the leading causes of accidental death in young children.
Guests of all ages are encouraged to wear swimsuits and participate in various interactive water safety activities, including CPR practice, music, prizes, and exciting waterpark and pool fun.
Parents can also sign up for swim lesson vouchers and learn about life-saving resources to make their homes water-safe year-round.
“April Pools Day was launched as a proactive initiative to raise awareness about water safety before the busy swimming season,” Captain Bruno Matos, Community Risk Reduction, tells Coral Springs Talk.
“The city recognized a need to provide families with life-saving information in a clear, engaging, and accessible format. Tragically, drowning remains a leading cause of accidental death for young children, and this event was designed to offer hands-on learning and prevention strategies before the summer heat hits and pools become more frequently used.”
Throughout the event, participants will learn how to properly use life jackets, perform basic CPR, identify and respond to water emergencies, and discover simple at-home prevention tactics such as pool fencing and assigning a “water watcher.”
Lifeguards, first responders, and safety professionals will be on-site to guide families through demonstrations and answer questions.
“Blending education with fun helps the message stick—especially for kids,” Matos tells Coral Springs Talk. “When relaxed and engaged, families are more open to learning. By creating a positive experience around a serious topic, the city aims to make water safety feel like second nature rather than a lecture.”
The goal is not only to create a memorable day but also to encourage year-round water safety awareness.
“Families can explore local swim lessons offered through community centers, Red Cross-certified programs, or private instructors,” Matos adds. “Designating a responsible ‘water watcher’ at all swim gatherings, installing pool alarms or fencing, and enrolling in CPR classes are all excellent steps. The National Drowning Prevention Alliance and Safe Kids Worldwide offer free resources, guides, and videos tailored for parents and caregivers.”
