Starting October 1, 2025, Florida will officially eliminate the Business Rent Tax (BRT), a move hailed as a major victory for the Coral Springs Coconut Creek Regional Chamber of Commerce and businesses statewide.
Florida had long been the only state to impose a sales tax on commercial leases, affecting everything from office spaces to retail storefronts. That ends this fall.
“This is a day we’ve been working toward for ten years,” said Charinus Johnson Davis, President/CEO of the Coral Springs Coconut Creek Regional Chamber. “Our members have carried this financial burden long enough, and thanks to our persistence, advocacy, and the support of the Florida Chamber and pro-business legislators, that burden is gone.”
Effective October 1, landlords must stop collecting sales tax on commercial lease payments. Tenants are encouraged to review lease invoices to ensure the tax is removed.
According to the chamber, their efforts, including lobbying in Tallahassee and organizing local advocacy campaigns, were instrumental in securing the repeal.
“This isn’t just a win on paper, it’s a real boost for our members’ bottom lines,” said Christine Shaw, Chamber Chair of Government Relations. “We’re proud to help create a business environment that rewards growth, not penalizes it.”
