A man was arrested and charged with felony battery after allegedly attacking an 81-year-old man outside the food court of Coral Square Mall.
According to a Coral Springs Police Department arrest report, Thomas John Gleason, 47, of Fort Lauderdale, was arrested on July 8 following an investigation into an incident that occurred on June 10 outside the mall’s food court.
Police say the senior victim and his family discovered a black bag abandoned on a trash can and were inspecting it to determine its owner when Gleason allegedly charged at the man, yelling and then violently pushing him to the ground. The victim’s head struck the concrete, resulting in an injury and serious swelling.
Witnesses – including the victim’s wife and adult son – told officers that Gleason fled on foot. Surveillance footage later obtained from the mall showed a balding white male in a light blue shirt, black pants, and glasses matching the family’s description leaving the scene in the direction of the mall’s main entrance.
Records show officers assigned to the mall beat were familiar with the suspect from previous encounters, reviewed the footage, and recognized the man in the video as Gleason.
A photo lineup was later conducted at Broward Health Coral Springs, where the victim received treatment and was discharged.
Gleason was located nearly a month later, on July 8, near 1285 University Drive. He was taken into custody and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
