Aaron Gallegos Ortiz and Pedro Raymundo {BSO}
Two Coral Springs men were arrested after police said they threatened a couple with a machete during a confrontation in a parking lot.
According to a Coral Springs Police Department probable cause affidavit, officers arrested Aaron Gallegos Ortiz, 43, and Pedro Raymundo, 44, of Coral Springs, on August 9 following an incident that police say began after a woman and a man became involved in a dispute with two men sitting in a green van near the 10700 block of Northwest 45th Street.
According to the affidavit, the woman told officers there had also been a verbal dispute involving the men the previous day, and that she asked them to leave the area. The woman told police the men became belligerent and began yelling in Spanish. She also said there had been a prior incident involving one of the men several months earlier.
According to investigators, the victims said they backed their vehicle into a parking space behind the van. Police said the two men then exited the van carrying machetes and approached their vehicle in what the victims described as a threatening manner.
One of the victims told police Gallegos Ortiz held a machete above his head as though he was preparing to swing it, while the second man allegedly pointed another machete toward the ground. The victims then drove away and called 911.
When officers contacted the suspects, police said Gallegos Ortiz spontaneously told them the victims had reversed their vehicle and that he had gotten out after seeing a firearm. The affidavit also states that Raymundo was described as heavily intoxicated and that several open containers of Modelo beer were found inside the vehicle.
Investigators said one machete was visible when officers arrived, and a second machete was discovered during an inventory search before the vehicle was towed.
Records show Gallegos Ortiz told detectives he had been sitting inside the vehicle when he saw the victims reverse toward them. He said he exited holding a machete after seeing what he believed was a firearm pointed in his direction.
The affidavit states that after receiving medical clearance, Gallegos Ortiz allegedly told a detective in Spanish that if he had done what he was being accused of, he would have killed the victims.
Gallegos Ortiz and Raymundo were arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail.
