Jeffrey Ernest Evans {BSO}
A man charged with domestic battery after his wife was found dead in a canal near their Coral Springs home pleaded not guilty last week, court records show.
Jeffrey Ernest Evans II, 43, who remains under investigation in the mysterious Aug. 25 death of his 38-year-old wife, Jessica Lloyd, has also asked a judge to remove him from a pre-trial electronic monitoring program that mandates his wearing of a GPS ankle monitor, according to court filings.
Formerly a lieutenant with Davie Fire Rescue, Evans is currently free from jail on a $1,000 bond. As part of his pretrial release agreement, he’s required to remain in his home 24 hours a day unless otherwise approved by the Broward Sheriff’s Office Division of Pretrial Services staff.
Evans must seek approval to leave his home for possible exceptions like medical appointments, employment, job hunting, shopping, and attending religious services, records show.
A hearing date has not been set for a judge to consider Evans’ request to remove his ankle monitor. Evans argued in court papers the device is not necessary to ensure his appearance in court or the public’s safety.
His not guilty plea and request to have the ankle monitor removed have not previously been reported.
Lloyd’s family last month launched a GoFundMe page to raise money for memorial costs, trauma counseling, legal expenses, and domestic violence awareness efforts in the wake of her death. The campaign had raised nearly $12,000 as of Monday.
Lloyd’s sister, Brittany, wrote in a recent update on the GoFundMe page that she had no updates on the Coral Springs Police Department’s investigation into Jessica’s death.
“Yes, it’s beyond frustrating,” she wrote. “I have so many questions needing to be answered but alas … we all have to wait.” She added: “Jeffrey has a hearing coming up to try and get his ankle monitor removed. We’re hoping that doesn’t happen.”
Lloyd’s death followed a domestic incident with Evans, her husband of 17 months.
Authorities received multiple 911 calls about Lloyd that night, including one from a neighbor who reported hearing her screaming that her husband was trying to kill her near their home at 9901 Northwest 15th Ct.
Another call was made by Evans, who reported that his wife was “experiencing a ‘mental break’ and needed police assistance,” according to a Coral Springs Police arrest affidavit.
Authorities found Lloyd in the water a short time later and rushed her to Broward Health Medical Center, where doctors pronounced her dead.
Police said their investigation showed that Lloyd and Evans had “been experiencing marital issues,” according to the affidavit.
On the GoFundMe page, Lloyd’s family and friends said she married Evans after a brief courtship and had less and less contact with friends and relatives.
Evans was arrested and charged with one count of domestic violence—simple battery, police said. No additional charges have been filed in the case, and police have not released any additional details about Lloyd’s death.
Evans had previously been accused of domestic violence in unrelated cases, but was not convicted.
In brief remarks made as he left BSO’s Pompano Beach jail facility following his arrest, Evans told WSVN: “I know what people think, I know what people think of me. People are always going to think what they want to think. It’s not what happened, it’s not the truth.”
Anyone with information about Lloyd’s death is asked to contact CSPD Detective Jessica Girard at JGirard@coralsprings.gov.
