The City of Coral Springs issued a proclamation on Wednesday honoring Hindu Heritage Month and the Diwali holiday, marking a moment of pride and inclusion for the city’s growing South Asian community.
City officials presented the proclamation during a public meeting, acknowledging the cultural and spiritual significance of Diwali, the Festival of Lights, which symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.
Resident Prem Mirpuri said, “I’m truly grateful to our city leaders for this meaningful acknowledgment and for always supporting our diverse community.”
This year also marks a historic milestone for Broward County Public Schools. For the first time, students will receive a school holiday on Monday, October 20, in observance of Diwali.
The decision by School Board members allows families to fully celebrate the festival’s traditions — decorating homes, lighting diyas (oil lamps), hanging festive lights, exchanging sweets and gifts, and offering prayers for peace and prosperity.
