The Coral Springs Quilt Guild honored 12 local veterans on Feb. 7 by presenting each with a handmade quilt during a special ceremony held in conjunction with National Quilts of Valor Sew Day.
Guild members wrapped each veteran in a custom-made quilt created and sewn by members as a gesture of appreciation for their military service. Each quilt was labeled with the recipient’s name and officially recorded in the National Quilts of Valor registry.
Veterans representing multiple branches of the U.S. Armed Forces were honored during the event.
Representing the U.S. Army were Edde Ortiz, John Brodie, Mark Anders, Moses Talton, John Moran, Will Rodriguez, and Arnold Rabinowitz.
Richard Miller represented the U.S. Air Force, while Amy Kitching was honored for service in the U.S. Coast Guard. U.S. Marine Corps veterans John Laveri and Alex Castro were also recognized, along with U.S. Navy veteran William Ahlert.
In addition to receiving their quilts, each veteran was presented with a tote bag containing care instructions to help preserve the handmade keepsakes.
The Quilts of Valor Foundation awards quilts nationwide to service members and veterans touched by war as a symbol of comfort and gratitude.
The Coral Springs Quilt Guild meets on the first Saturday of each month at St. Mary Magdalene and St. Martin Episcopal Church on Riverside Drive in Coral Springs.
