A pair of local softball teams took on the top competition in Broward County at the Big-8 Championship, with Coral Springs Charter making a run to the final and Coral Glades battling through a pair of tightly contested games.
Coral Springs Charter, the No. 2 seed, opened with a dominant 12-0 win over Cooper City High School. Gio Gurgel led the way with two home runs and four RBIs, while Leah Rutherford, Cam Thiele, and Gyensynn Courtney each drove in two. Jazzy Chung and Chloe Koering added RBIs as well. Courtney Wahlbrink was dominant in the circle, throwing four hitless innings with nine strikeouts before Lyralynn Courtney finished off the shutout.
The Panthers followed that with a 1-0 win over Western High School in a much tighter contest. The lone run came on a wild pitch, while Wahlbrink continued her strong play, allowing just two hits and striking out 12. Chung and Addi Brown recorded the team’s hits.
In the championship game, Coral Springs Charter held the No. 2-ranked team in the state scoreless through six innings but couldn’t push a run across and fell 1-0 on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh. Wahlbrink started and tossed two scoreless innings before Courtney took over and kept the Chiefs off the board until the game’s lone run. The teams could meet again in the District Tournament, with another potential matchup looming in Regionals.
Coral Glades also competed in the event and opened with a high-scoring 10-8 loss to Western High School. The Jaguars grabbed an early 1-0 lead but surrendered six runs in the bottom of the first inning. They responded with three runs in the second and added four more in the fifth to stay within striking distance.
The Jaguars bounced back in their consolation game, defeating Cooper City High School 2-1 with a walk-off run in the bottom of the seventh. The win moves Coral Glades to 11-7 on the season as they head into the District Tournament alongside Western, Marjory Stoneman Douglas and J.P. Taravella.
