Eight sixth-grade students from Coral Springs Middle School made school history this past weekend, earning second place in their division during their first-ever appearance at the annual Plywood Regatta in Dania Beach.
Competing against 15 teams, the students built their boat entirely on their own, without assistance from teachers or parents, before racing it the following day. The team spent 11 hours on Saturday constructing the vessel from scratch using only plywood, caulk, and zip ties, then returned on Sunday to put their creation to the test on the water.
Representing Coral Springs Middle School were Dylan Borisoff, Sam Borisoff, Jacey Fleming, Freddie Gonzalez, Zoe Kuryl-Champine, Avery Locke, Sabrina Sherman, and Thomas Smith.

Beyond their strong finish, the students were recognized for their teamwork and sportsmanship, supporting one another while also encouraging fellow competitors throughout the event.

The Plywood Regatta, established in 1996, is a South Florida tradition that promotes marine education, vocational skills, and collaboration. Students are challenged to design and build seaworthy boats in a single day, then race them the next. Proceeds from the event benefit local marine industry education programs.

Following the competition, while many teams discarded their boats, Coral Springs Middle teachers Barbara Fronrath and Cathy Puleo ensured their students’ hard work would live on. The boat was brought back to campus, where it will be repurposed as a planter.
