Eagle Ridge Elementary in Coral Springs {Eagle Ridge Elementary}
Students at Eagle Ridge Elementary School marked the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks by honoring the first responders who serve their community.
Students created handmade cards for members of the Coral Springs Police Department and Coral Springs-Parkland Fire Department, thanking them for protecting and serving local residents.
The students also met retired New York Police Department Officer Diedrick, who responded to the World Trade Center following the attacks. His firsthand account gave students an opportunity to learn about the courage, sacrifice and unity demonstrated by first responders on Sept. 11.
Jessica Schroeder, a fifth-grade teacher and former New Yorker who was living in the state at the time of the attacks, said teaching students about that day remains meaningful and emotional.
“As a former New Yorker who was living in New York at the time of the attack, teaching these kids about it firsthand is always a meaningful and emotional lesson,” Schroeder said. “I pray that the children of today never fully understand the magnitude of something so tragic.”
