Chad Gilbert and his wife Lisa. {New Found Glory}
Chad Gilbert, the Coral Springs native who helped turn a local band into a pop-punk mainstay New Found Glory, died Sunday, September 20. He was 45.
Gilbert’s wife, Lisa Cimorelli, and his bandmates announced his death in a joint statement, saying Gilbert died peacefully in his sleep with his wife and mother beside him. The statement did not specify a cause of death. Gilbert had publicly discussed his treatment for various forms of cancer since 2021, including a recent bout with brain tumors.

Born in Coral Springs, Gilbert helped form New Found Glory in 1997. He played lead guitar, wrote songs, and sang backup vocals as the band grew from local shows into a defining act of the early 2000s pop-punk scene. Its songs include “Hit or Miss” and “My Friends Over You.”
Gilbert attended J.P. Taravella High School in Coral Springs when he joined New Found Glory, which had been started by Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School students.
His illness interrupted his time onstage. After doctors found three tumors in his brain earlier this year, Gilbert underwent surgery in February. He returned to perform with New Found Glory in Nashville in June and later wrote that playing in front of his young daughter, Lily, was something he had feared he would never do again.
In their statement, his family and bandmates remembered his music and the life he built outside it: “His favorite accomplishment was being a husband and father.”
Blink-182’s Mark Hoppus also released a statement.

“Chad was the best friend to every person he met. The most positive and creative force in any room he walked into. These past years, he fought his sickness with the soul of a joyous, courageous warrior. With dignity, love, and gratitude. He never complained once, only kept saying how lucky he was. For everything,” Hoppus wrote. “Today we lost a good one, and the world won’t be the same.”

Gilbert is survived by Cimorelli, their daughter Lily, his mother Jackie, and his brother Brian.
