Coral Springs Needs Residents Interested in Running for Office

Are you a civic-minded person that has an interest in our local government? Then consider throwing your hat into the ring because residents in Coral Springs have time before the qualifying date in June.

There are several open seats available, including one for mayor and three city commissioners. A mayor of Coral Springs is currently compensated at $21,776.00 plus expenses and commissioners make $17,420.00 per year plus expenses. On the November ballot, residents will be asked if they want to amend the Charter and raise this amount for commissioners to $28,000 and the mayor to $34,000 beginning in 2017 making this a well-paid part-time position.

Mayor

Currently Vince Boccard is serving as mayor, but will be term-limited in November making this an open seat. City Commissioner Tom Powers, a retired Arizona State Police Officer, is the only one that has expressed an interest in running for mayor so far. Powers has also served as vice mayor, as well as on several city committees

City Commissioner Seat 2

Commissioner Dan Daley is up for reelection in November. He has held commission seat 2 since being elected in 2012. Daley runs an online business in Coral Springs that distributes Golden Gro Horse Supplements as well as attends Law School at Nova University throughout the year. So far no other candidate has expressed an interest in running for this seat.

City Commissioner Seat 4

Seat four is an open seat that will soon be vacated by Claudette Bruck who will be term-limited in November. So far two people announced they will be running: Howard Melamed, a civil engineer and CEO of CellAntenna Corporation in Coral Springs and Lou Cimaglia, a real estate broker, who has been in the real estate business since the 1970s and active volunteer with the Knights of Columbus.

City Commissioner Seat 5

Currently occupied by Commissioner Tom Powers who is running for mayor, two candidates already have publicly started their campaigns to fill this seat: Joy Carter, realtor with Keller Williams, and a long-time volunteer for various city organizations and Laurette Homan owner of Hilton Insurance Services in Coral Springs and graduate of Coral Springs High School.

If you are interested in becoming a candidate for either of these four seats, then submit qualification documents at the Office of the City Clerk during the qualification period from 12:00 Noon on Monday, June 16, 2014 until 12:00 Noon on Friday, June 20, 2014.
