The City of Coral Springs has closed the skateboarding area within Betti Stradling Park, possibly for good.
News of the sudden closure of the beloved skatepark has left residents surprised.
According to Coral Springs resident Andrew Levy, local skaters are outraged over a recent decision and plan to protest at city hall.
“They shut down the local skate park, so skaters are going to start skating city hall in protest until they reopen it,” Levy said, adding that he sees a double standard and lack of priority when it comes to activities residents enjoy “I don’t see why they’ve got money for all these pickleball courts and can’t keep one skatepark open.”
In an emailed statement in response to an inquiry about the status of the closure, the city shared the reasons behind the closure but offered few concrete plans or deadlines in place to reopen the park.
According to the statement, the decision to close the park was made due to the need for replacement and repairs to the apparatus.
Additionally, the vendor, All Out Skate, responsible for the maintenance and operations, declined to renew their service agreement with the city, citing a considerable decline in the skate park use.
“While the skate park is closed, our dedicated staff are actively exploring alternative options that align with our long-term goals,” Coral Springs Media Relations Coordinator Lindsey Steinberg tells Coral Springs Talk, adding future plans for the area are still fluid.
“We understand the importance of the skate park to some of our residents, and we are committed to finding a suitable solution that aligns with the Parks Master Plan’s objectives.
Coral Springs Talk will update this story as the city works to address the concerns of its residents and find a suitable solution.
