The Coral Springs Charter softball team captured its first title of the season, winning the Big-8 Championship, which featured the top teams in Broward County.
“The Big 8 is a grueling event,” Head Coach Mark Montimurro said. It’s very hard to win. The girls all stepped up their games, and it resulted in us bringing home another trophy. A real tribute to the young ladies for coming through once again.”
The Panthers entered the tournament with 16 wins and earned the top seed before defeating Coral Glades 11-1 in their first game. Courtney Wahlbrink hit a home run and drove in two runs while also pitching four hitless innings with six strikeouts, while Gio Gurgel led the team with three RBIs.
Addi Brown, Bree Martinelli, Heather Robertson, Mia Rodtiguez, and Shelby Stephens all knocked in runs. Sophia Bertorelli came in relief and pitched two innings as the Jaguars also lost to West Broward High School 10-0 in their second game and are set to play Marjory Stoneman Douglas in the opening round of the District Tournament on Monday, April 28, at 4 p.m.
The Panthers continued to produce offensively following a 16-2 win over St. Thomas Aquinas High School on Tuesday, following three home runs and seven RBIs from Robertson. Gurgel added another homer and knocked in two more runs along with one from Brown, Martinelli, Tiggy Courtney, Stephens, and Wahlbrink. Bertorelli started this game and pitched four innings, allowing only one earned run and seven strikeouts before Emma Ruiz got the final three outs.
In the Championship Game, Robertson, who went on to win MVP, homered for the fourth time and drove in two. Gurgel and Wahlbrink each knocked in two while Martinelli and Addi Michel also had RBIs.
Bertotrelli tossed the first three innings before Wahlbrink closed it, and the duo combined for nine strikeouts. CSC has now been in the championship all seven years of the tournament and has won five titles.
The Panthers will be the top seed in the District Tournament and play either Calvary Christian Academy or Somerset Academy on Tuesday, April 29, at 5 p.m. Cardinal Gibbons High School is the second seed and will play either Pompano Beach or American Heritage High School.
J.P. Taravella also qualified for the postseason and will be seeded fourth in their District, playing top-seeded Western High School on April 28 at 6:30 p.m. The Trojans went 6-7 this year and will be playing three 25th-ranked teams in Florida.
Coral Springs High School is also the fourth seed and will play top-seeded West Boca Raton Community High School in the opening round on April 28 at 12 p.m. The Bulls went 4-13 this year, while the winner will play either Monarch or Olympic Heights Community High School in the final on April 30 at 6 p.m.
