While it was spring break for most students, the Coral Glades softball and baseball teams were in action, picking up wins.
The softball team played four games in the Orange Bowl Classic this week, defeating Sports Leadership and Management for their only win on Thursday.
The Jaguars won 4-1, with Mackenzie Wolfe recording two hits and an RBI. She also scored on a passed ball, while Raquel Christie also drove in a run with a double. On the mound, Ciara Gendron pitched six innings allowing no earned runs, two hits, and striking out six before Haleigh Thomas recorded the save with a hitless seventh inning for the team’s sixth win this year.
The Jaguars fell to Pembroke Pines Charter and Bishop Verot by a combined two runs. Wolfe and Shelby Stephens each drove in two runs, while Thomas, Carmela Smith, and Casey Zanijian all had one.
“The girls played their hearts out and played extremely well against three very good teams,” said Head Coach Richard Waldorf. “We were 1-2 and lost the last two games on the last play of the game.”
Next, Coral Glades will have a week off before facing St. Thomas Aquinas High School. The Raiders are 5-5 this year after winning nine games a season ago and won 8-5 in their only meeting last year.
The team had a comeback win on Wednesday against Santaluces High School. Despite trailing by a run heading into the final inning, the Jaguars took the lead with four runs in the seventh but couldn’t hold a three-run lead in the home half. However, they added a run in the eighth and held on for the team’s seventh win of the season.
“I was extremely proud of our team last night especially missing three starters, said Head Coach Joe Franco. “They fought and battled throughout the game and represented the grit and pride that comes with being a Coral Glades baseball player. Every time I play my brother, it’s a win, win because a Franco will always come out on top.”
Kyle Fernandes and Andrew Allison each pitched four innings, with Allison recording the win. He also had three hits offensively.
Next, the Jaguars will play Everglades High School on Wednesday, March 29, at 6:30 p.m. The Gators are 3-5 this year and had one of their three wins come against Coral Glades in the BCAA Tournament. Everglades also has wins this year against South Plantation and Hollywood Hills High School.
