American Heritage Schools is celebrating a huge accomplishment – 16 students from the Class of 2025—12 from the Broward Campus and four from the Palm Beach Campus—have been named semifinalists in the prestigious U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, the nation’s highest honor for graduating high school seniors.
The two campuses collectively account for 11% of all candidates in Florida, a notable achievement that places American Heritage Schools at the top statewide. The Broward Campus is the No. 1 school in Florida for the most Presidential Scholar candidates, while the Palm Beach Campus ranks No. 1 in Palm Beach County and No. 3 statewide.
“Being named a Presidential Scholar candidate is an extraordinary honor that reflects the dedication, intellect, and perseverance of our students,” Dr. Doug Laurie, president of American Heritage Schools, said via a school press release, “We are incredibly proud of these outstanding young leaders whose commitment to excellence and service sets them apart on a national stage.”
One such student is Yusuf Sheikh, a senior at the Broward Campus and a resident of Coral Springs from the Pelican Isles neighborhood. Yusuf, who earned a perfect 1600 on the SAT as a freshman and holds a 6.05 GPA, hopes to attend Yale University next fall.
“Yusuf’s nomination is a product of his rigorous course load, compelling essay, and commitment to serving his community through extracurricular activities,” the school tells Coral Springs Talk, “All of these factors showcased Yusuf as a multi-faceted individual with exceptional promise.”
According to the program’s website, the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 to recognize the nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors. Scholars are selected based on academic achievement, artistic excellence, leadership, character, essays, and community service.
Approximately 500 semifinalists are chosen annually, with 161 students ultimately earning the title of U.S. Presidential Scholar and receiving the Presidential Scholar Medallion during a special White House ceremony.
