A Coral Springs man is facing a series of serious charges after his girlfriend reported a terrifying night of violence and threats involving drugs and firearms inside an apartment.
According to the police report, on April 15, Coral Springs Police officers were dispatched to the lobby of The Modera apartments at 3210 North University Drive just after 1:30 a.m., where a woman flagged down help after escaping what she described as a violent and drug-fueled assault by her boyfriend, later identified as Jose Hernandez, 34, of Coral Springs.
During the interview, officers noted in the report that the victim showed visible signs of injury, including lacerations to her face, swelling under both eyes, and bruising on her neck. With the help of a Spanish-speaking officer, she recounted that the incident began after the couple had dinner and drinks at a restaurant on the ground floor of the apartment complex.
The incident report notes that the victim told officers that Hernandez allegedly began using cocaine and became increasingly paranoid and aggressive when the woman refused to participate. According to the victim, Hernandez physically assaulted her, including choking her until she struggled to breathe and striking her multiple times.
At one point, the victim told law enforcement that Hernandez pulled out a black handgun and threatened to kill her, yelling “Find the fucking cocaine or I will kill you.”
The victim said she was prevented from leaving the apartment for about 30 minutes, with Hernandez allegedly grabbing her phone to stop her from calling 911. She was finally able to flee when Hernandez momentarily stepped into another room to look for the cocaine he felt he was missing.
Detectives say Hernandez initially agreed to come to the police department for questioning, but he failed to show. Officers later executed a search warrant at his apartment, where they uncovered an alarming cache of controlled substances and anabolic steroids, including human growth hormone, methandrostenolone pills, and anabolic steroids.
The report shows the apartment also contained additional firearms. Hernandez was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail, where he was later released on bond totaling $66,000.
