By Dan I Cook
I wrote about Bonefish Mac’s Sports Grille in 2017 mostly because they won Best Martini (Watermelon) and Prime Rib. You’ll see the awards by the hostess stand, and although I caught some heat from other restaurants about the Best Prime Rib, it was well deserved for the price and taste.
Since then, I’ve become a loyal fan of Bonefish Mac’s.
They have an extensive menu which, at first, I was skeptical of. Hard to master approximately 147 food items, but somehow they do.
As we run through my favorites, you will see the bang for your buck is outstanding here. You get a good portion for the money you spend, and who doesn’t love that?
1. Mac Daddy Nachos
Described as “Tri-color tortilla chips chili, cheeses, onions, tomatoes, lettuce, and jalapeño peppers. Served with sour cream and pico.” This baby is huge! On the menu, it says enough to feed four. This pile of deliciousness is perfect with a cold drink and to graze on while watching a game.
2. Beer-Battered Fish Fingers
It’s their fresh catch which has always been Mahi, and they are hand-battered. This is on the appetizer list, and it pains me to even mention this to ya’ll, but these are the best fish fingers in Broward County. It pains me because they don’t make many portions of this, and they sell out quickly.
I have to give a shout-out to my friend Ron Buckley who turned me onto this appetizer. Ron and I debated who had the best fish fingers, and any made with that Basa Fish don’t count. I consider Basa Fish crap, and it’s mostly used because it’s dirt cheap. I told him Whale’s Rib in Deerfield Beach was my choice, and he said, “No way! You have to try the ones at Bonefish Mac’s”.
Because I respect his knowledge of food, I decided to give them a whirl. Holy $hit, these things were excellent! Nice generous portion, a common theme, deep golden exterior with the nice white meaty interior. I like to squeeze some fresh lemon on top and dip them in cocktail sauce. Pure heaven!
3. Bacon Cheese Fries
They are served with sour cream & chives. Now let’s face it, The Outback makes some of the best cheese fries on the planet. Feel free to make fun of me for that statement, but I don’t care. Bonefish Mac’s are damn good. The fries are cut bigger and just loaded down with cheese. If you’ve had these before, you know exactly what I’m writing about. Definitely a guilty pleasure that I highly recommend.
4. Buffalo Shrimp
It’s a basket of spicy jumbo buffalo-style shrimp served with celery and Blue cheese dressing. The portion is excellent, and the shrimp are jumbo. Nice tangy buffalo sauce and fried perfectly. Which reminds me, whoever works the fry station here deserves a raise. You are frying magic, my friend.
5. Lobster Roll*
It’s described as “freshly made lobster salad* served with shredded lettuce in twin toasted New England style buns. Served with freshly fried potato chips.” The asterisk is for, “Our freshly made lobster salad always contains real lobster meat and may contain some Lobster Sensation imitation lobster.”
I don’t care if they are using some fake lobster mixed with the real stuff. I thoroughly enjoy this roll. They pack the toasted buns full with this cold lobster* mix, and it is so delicious. I like to add some Tabasco on top just to give it a little zing.
6. Mom’s Carrot Cake
Described as, “homemade moist and delicious single layer favorite topped with warm cream cheese icing.” I’m a sucker for a good carrot cake. This one is pretty tasty. A nice layer of icing paired with the different spices, nuts, and raisins makes Dan’s belly very happy. As a grown man child, I always giggle when I hear, write, or say the word “moist.” Well, folks, this cake is super moist and delicious. I like it served cold, but they also heat it.
I’m just scratching the surface with their food. The burgers, a quarter-pound hot dog, stuffed shrimp, shrimp and chips, conch chowder, deep-sea crack mac, fresh potato chip basket my wife’s favorite, and my buddy Ron C’s favorite; jerked jambalaya bowl are more outstanding selections if you haven’t been here before you will be pleasantly surprised.
7. Ambiance
Rustic beach shack meets sports bar. That’s the best way to describe it, even though it’s miles from the beach. Who cares. Just don’t face the parking lot and just let your mind wander as you sip a cold drink and nosh on some food.
There are big TVs everywhere, and it’s a chill spot to catch a game and chat with your friends. This place can get busy, but don’t let that scare you away. I prefer to sit outside, but I have no issues with going inside. This gem is great for families with kids too. They have a small arcade with newer video games and a claw machine. An arcade is always good to occupy the children’s attention and some grown adults, like me.
8. Service
I’ve only had one issue with service, and that was years ago. Since that day, service has been on point, and the food comes out nice and hot. Drinks are always cold and served with a smile. What more can you ask for…..Just more Fish Fingers.
Verdict
I like to compare apples to apples when it comes to my reviews. With that said, Flanigans is one of my all-time favorites. I fell in love with the joint when Piranha Pat’s in Pompano Beach first open. It later morphed into the brand, Flanigans. Bonefish Mac’s Sports Grille and Flanigans are very similar with their food, decor, and vibe.
I would have to give the edge to Bonefish Mac’s because of the portion size and prices. The fact Bonefish Mac’s hasn’t been around nearly as long as Flanigans and is damn good shows you they are on a successful path.
Before I rate this, I saved the best for last—-the owner Chuck.
I’ve had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of times. He is a Marine Corps Vietnam Veteran, and since I’m a Marine, we hit it off right away. He explained how he got started in the food business and how it parleyed into his restaurants. He is committed to serving good quality chow/food for a good price. I have to say he has succeeded with that mission. Thank you for your service Devil Dog and for having your restaurant in Coral Springs!
I rate them four beers.
Thank you to our server Craig and Manager Jim, for assisting us with our wonderful food and restaurant photoshoot. Remember to tell them, Dan I Cook, and Coral Springs Talk sent you and Stay Hungry!
Four beers = Outstanding
Three beers = Good
Two beers = OK
One beer = Needs work
Zero beers= Sucks (No beer is never a good thing).
