A newly renovated women’s mikvah at Chabad of Coral Springs will offer “spa-like” serenity while allowing local Jewish women to follow a cherished tradition of restoration of ritual purity.
Chaya Mushka Yaras, Chabad’s program director, said the renovation of the mikvah, which had operated since the early 2000s, took over two years and has been partially financed through a grant from Mikvah USA.
“The renovations took longer than we anticipated because of Covid-19 complications, but now that the mikvah is retiled and repainted, it is a serene and beautiful place. We hope women will feel comfortable and relaxed using it,” she said.
Yaras explained that mikvah is a natural water pool traditionally used for ritual cleansing. Women in Jewish marriages are obligated to use it once a month, after the menstrual courses and before restarting a sexual relationship with their husbands.
“We hope many Jewish families in Coral Springs will take advantage of the mikvah at Chabad,” she said, adding that marital intimacy is a holy thing, and following the tradition is one of the ways of inviting God into the marriage.
Yaris said the Jewish people were not always free to use mikvahs in the past and often had to find ways to create such pools of water in places hidden from the general public.
“My grandfather told me that as a boy in Soviet Russia, he had seen mikvahs concealed under the floorboards in people’s houses. It was dangerous to follow the religious practices but having a mikvah was very important to Jews at all times,” she explained.
Mikvah’s dedication is held on Sunday, February 20, and will include a brunch for women only at 10:30 a.m., followed by a discussion on Judaism’s take on intimacy.
Men and women are then invited to join the dessert buffet and a facility tour. RSVP or sponsor the event here.
Chabad of Coral Springs is located at 3925 N. University Dr.
