A routine Coral Springs traffic stop has led to the arrest of a heavily armed man accused of trafficking large quantities of the highly dangerous drug fentanyl.
According to a Coral Springs Police Department arrest report, on September 25, officers observed a black Chevrolet Avalanche parked at a Mobil gas station on West Atlantic Boulevard. A records check showed the registered owner, identified as Ryan Eugene Cohee, 42, of Davie, had a suspended driver’s license.
When Cohee drove off, records show law enforcement initiated surveillance and later clocked the vehicle at 46 mph in a 40 mph zone. A traffic stop followed near Southgate Boulevard and Pine Island Road.
Officers reported the smell of cannabis and reported seeing a burning joint in plain view. Cohee admitted to having medical marijuana but did not produce a valid card, police said.
A K-9 unit alerted to the vehicle, and a subsequent search uncovered a hidden compartment beneath the center console containing a fully loaded Taurus 9mm handgun with an extended magazine and ammunition.
Detectives continuted to search the vehicle and found a tactical backpack holding a digital scale, pill bottles in Cohee’s name, and a clear bag with 25 grams of what was later confirmed to be the deadly drug fentanyl.
Court filings note that Cohee has eight prior felony convictions and is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition.
Cohee was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail, where he remains without bond.
