Coral Springs Kicks off the 12th Annual Festival of the Arts in March

The Coral Springs Festival of the Arts will celebrate its twelfth year on March 19 and 20 with an impressive array of 200 artists and crafters and an exciting schedule of music and performing arts entertainment.

“The Coral Springs Festival of the Arts is constantly trying to entertain, educate and inspire the area citizens,” said Shirley Richards, President of the CSFOA. “This year, to appeal to a more youthful crowd, we have instituted an ‘Urban Art Paint Out’ where six former street artists will compete and paint four by five feet canvases live.”

Kicking off the Festival on March 18 and 19 will be two days of literary workshops at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts specially designed for writers, editors and illustrators where presentations on poetry, mystery, suspense, and Photoshop for illustrators will be held. All of the workshops are free to the public and high school and college students are encouraged to attend.

During the Festival, music will vary from calypso, reggae, to country, a rock and roll violinist, a 19-piece jazz orchestra playing big band sound, salsa and merengue and a Tina Turner tribute band. The performing arts stage will include performances by an 18-member banjo band; former members of the folk group The Highwaymen; multicultural dance groups from Peru, Ireland, and India; the Broward Women’s Choral Group, and Japanese drums.

Watch street artists compete in a live “paint out” on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The contest is being produced by Julia Andrews, Director of the Coral Springs Museum of Art and Byron Swart Artistic Director and Curator for Creative City Collaborative. Six “street artists” will compete to receive a lobby show at The Coral Springs Center for the Arts and a monetary award.

With something for all ages, the festival includes a children’s area with arts activities, a puppet show, and a very popular bubble dance. The Coral Springs Garden Club will hold Gardenfest in conjunction with the Festival showcasing many plant vendors.

The festival is an experience no one should miss. Produced by Howard Alan Events, it will be open on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All venues and parking are free to the public.
