A Coral Springs man was arrested on Wednesday over an alleged plot to bomb the New York Stock Exchange to “reset” the U.S. government, according to unsealed documents.
Harun Abdul-Malik Yener, 30, was arrested Wednesday following an FBI investigation that uncovered his alleged plans to bomb a “building used in interstate or foreign commerce” in New York during Thanksgiving week. Federal prosecutors say Yener intended the attack as a means to trigger a governmental “reboot” or “reset.”
The announcement was made by Markenzy Lapointe, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, alongside Matthew G. Olsen, Assistant Attorney General for National Security, and Jeffrey Veltri, Special Agent in Charge of the FBI’s Miami Field Office.
According to court documents, the FBI began investigating Yener in February after receiving a tip about bombmaking schematics stored in an unlocked storage unit.
A search of the unit uncovered a trove of items, including sketches of explosives, circuit boards, electronic timers, and other components potentially used for constructing bombs.
Investigators also traced years of online searches on Yener’s Google account, dating back to 2017, related to bombmaking techniques.
In June, Yener expressed his desire to join an anti-government militia and began sharing his plans with an undercover FBI operative, whom he believed was a militia member.
Authorities say he specifically identified a prominent New York City business as his target and began crafting plans for the attack, including research on where to plant the bomb and how to disguise himself.
Yener allegedly constructed a remote trigger for the device and tasked FBI operatives with obtaining explosive materials, conducting surveillance of the business, and providing photos to finalize the plan.
He reportedly described the expected impact as being akin to “a small nuke” capable of wiping out anything and anyone near the site.
Authorities say Yener also recorded a message for the press, explaining his reasons for the attack, and planned to disguise himself while carrying out the plot.
Yener was arrested before the plan could be executed. He made an initial court appearance on Wednesday and agreed to remain in custody pending a pretrial detention hearing, which he may request at a later date.
The FBI, the Coral Springs Police Department, and the Joint Terrorism Task Force conducted the investigation.
