The Coral Springs Museum of Art will open two abstract solo exhibitions side by side on Friday, Jan. 16, inviting visitors to explore contemporary abstraction through distinct yet complementary artistic voices.
The exhibitions — Underneath the Surface of Sight by Lisa MacNamara and Casa Dolce Casa by Tommaso Fattovich — will be on view in the museum’s Main and East galleries, respectively.
Together, the shows present parallel journeys into the human experience, examining identity, environment, and emotion through abstract form. While each artist approaches abstraction differently, the paired exhibitions create a dialogue that encourages viewers to reflect on both internal and external landscapes.
MacNamara’s Underneath the Surface of Sight looks inward, drawing inspiration from the body’s subtle architecture, including skin, cells, and energy channels. Influenced early in her career by journalistic photography, MacNamara works in mixed-media paintings and sculpture to examine what lies beneath perception, creating pieces that evoke introspection and emotional depth. Her exhibition will be featured in the Main Gallery.
In contrast, Fattovich’s Casa Dolce Casa explores abstraction through raw, expressive mark-making. A self-taught painter from Milan, Fattovich is known for his “Abstract Punk” style, using his hands and unconventional tools to build layered, textured surfaces. His works reflect the worn and decaying beauty of urban environments and will be displayed in the East Gallery.
“Presenting these solo exhibitions side by side allows viewers to experience two separate but powerful interpretations of abstraction,” Museum Director Juliana Forero said. “One explores the idea of home as both a state of mind and as a physical space that invites authenticity, and the other portrays the quiet landscapes of the body. We look forward to the powerful conversations their work will spark among our visitors.”
An opening reception will be held Friday, Jan. 16, from 6 to 9 p.m., offering guests the opportunity to meet both artists and explore the exhibitions. Details and RSVP information are available online.
Two exhibition-related events are scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 31. Visual Language with Lisa MacNamara, a hands-on fiber arts workshop, will take place from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The cost to participate is $40.
Later that day, In Conversation, a discussion featuring Fattovich and MacNamara, will be held from 3 to 4 p.m. The discussion is free and open to the public. Registration for both events is available online.
