Coral Springs Police Sgt. Bill Capplis is kicking off his campaign for Coral Springs City Commission Seat 3 on June 1 with an event at Wings Plus on Sample Road.
The event, scheduled for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the popular eatery and bar, comes as a growing number of candidates prepare to compete for the open seat in the November 2026 election.
An invitation for the campaign kick-off event says it is open to the public and that campaign contributions are being accepted in accordance with city election rules.
Capplis, a 26-year veteran of the Coral Springs Police Department currently assigned to the department’s Community Involvement Unit, previously said he plans to retire from law enforcement later this year and continue serving the city through public office.
The Seat 3 contest opened following the death of Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer earlier this year. Metayer had been reelected in 2024, meaning the winner of the November 2026 election will serve the remainder of her term.
Metayer was fatally shot inside her Coral Springs home by her husband, Stephen Bowen, in April, police and prosecutors say. Prosecutors have charged Bowen with first-degree murder and evidence tampering. He has pleaded not guilty.
Several other candidates have also filed paperwork to run for the seat, including Erick Nyatenya, Adeline Darius, Terry Ann Williams Edden, and Marly Metayer, the mother of the late vice mayor.
The official qualifying period for Coral Springs municipal candidates is scheduled for June 8 through June 12, with the election set for Nov. 3.
