A Coral Springs tow-truck driver narrowly escaped injury after police say a man fired a handgun as the driver attempted to tow his illegally parked car.
According to a Coral Springs Police Department arrest report, Maurice Dixon, 27, of Coral Springs, is accused of firing a gun at the driver as he was towing his car from the parking lot at the Garden Apartment complex located at 8203 West Sample Road.
The incident happened around 1:45 a.m. on December 11, when the tow-truck driver responded to a call from the apartment complex’s management to remove the vehicle, which had been reported as illegally parked.
As the driver began pulling away, he told police he saw Dixon exit a second-floor apartment, waving his arms and yelling, “Yo, yo, yo.” Moments later, the driver heard a loud bang that he immediately recognized as a gunshot, though he did not initially see a firearm.
Fearing for his life, the driver ducked down inside the cab and accelerated out of the parking lot. He contacted his dispatcher to report that someone had fired at him, and the dispatcher notified police, according to the report.
The driver later went to the Coral Springs Police Department to give a statement. Detectives reviewed video footage from the tow truck’s onboard camera system, which police said corroborated the driver’s account.
The video shows Dixon exiting the apartment and gesturing toward the tow truck with a dark object visible in his right hand, police said. A visible flash can be seen as Dixon fires a single round in the direction of the tow truck.
Police obtained a search warrant for the apartment and executed it on December 12, where they found Dixon along with three other men inside. During questioning, Dixon admitted to firing the handgun but claimed he accidentally pulled the trigger while waving the gun.
Dixon told detectives he hid the firearm inside a drawer of an organizer in his roommate’s closet because he was on probation.
While searching Dixon’s bedroom for additional firearms, police discovered a black plastic storage bin containing multiple large clear bags of suspected cannabis and a small digital scale. The marijuana was later weighed at about 8.5 pounds.
A records check showed Dixon was already on felony probation for trafficking methamphetamine at the time of the shooting.
Dixon was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail. Bond has been set at $32,500, according to jail records.
