Broward County Public Schools reported 1,056 new COVID-19 cases during the first half of May, 56 more than the entire month of April, school records show.
Since school began on Aug. 18, 2021, coronavirus infections have been confirmed for at least 8,873 students, and 6,049 school employees, the school system’s COVID-19 dashboard showed as of May 16.
The case increase comes amid another wave of coronavirus infections impacting Florida.
The daily statewide average for new COVID-19 cases has been rising throughout May. There were 7,828 new cases recorded in Florida last week, a number not reached since the omicron variant swept across the state last winter.
The COVID-19 positivity rate in Broward County was 16.5 percent as of last week, with nine new COVID hospital admissions recorded each day per 100,000 people, federal data show.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, an omicron variant known as B.A.2.12.1 is driving the current coronavirus wave.
