Coral Springs High School baseball continues its terrific season, with both the varsity and junior varsity teams picking up wins.

The varsity team picked up their fourth win of the year with a 5-3 win over South Broward High School on Thursday. Ruben Zunay continued to shine on the mound, with four hitless innings to earn the win. Alexander Montero pitched the next two innings before Nicholas Pina recorded the final three outs.

Despite falling behind 1-0, Daniel Aneja tied the game in the third with an RBI single. Alexander Montero then reached on an error to bring in two more runs for the Colts. After Aoutb Broward tied the game in the top of the sixth, CSHS responded immediately. Kyle Beck was hit by a pitch to drive in a run, and Ryan Guthrie then brought one in with his second hit of the night.

Head Coach John Brown was proud of his team for coming out strong offensively after an eight-day layoff. He credits the bottom of the order for coming, though, but still wants to see his team improve.

“We still believe our best baseball is ahead,” said Brown. “Collectively, we have to think the decisions that we always wanted to make as a staff is just trying to create consistency among the group, and the closer we could get to roles quicker, the better we felt we would be.”

They are set to play Nova High School in their next game on Monday, March 13, at 7 p.m. These two teams met earlier this year with a 4-1 for Nova’s only loss this season.

The junior varsity team recorded their third win this year with a victory over Deerfield Beach High School.

They got the scoring with Guthrie scoring on a wild pitch before Fernando Matos played two with an RBI double, and Aiden Roy recorded an RBI groundout to make it 4-0.

Deerfield Beach answered with four runs to cut the deficit to three but added five runs in the ninth inning. Roy recorded a pair of RBIs while Manny Torres had a rbi double, and Fernando Matos and Nathan Mendez walked with the bases loaded. Angel Rugain recorded the win for the Colts, while Sebastian Garcia, Roy, and Guthrie pitched in relief.

“We have a very talented bunch of young guys,” Brown added. “They’ve been locked in since the fall. After the split with Miami Christian, they were very eager to get the opportunity to get back on the field. We had a few mental lapses late in the game. We need to continue developing our guys day in and day out. We only will go up from here.”

Next, the Colts will have two weeks off before facing Cardinal Gibbons High School on March 25 in a doubleheader.
