On July 9, children attending the Coral Springs Police Department’s Summer Youth Program will receive free comprehensive eye exams and prescription glasses, thanks to the Florida Heiken Children’s Vision Program, a statewide initiative by the Miami Lighthouse for the Blind and Visually Impaired.
With over 100 campers expected, the event aims to provide essential vision care to low-income students who may otherwise lack access to these services. The Heiken Program’s mobile eye clinic will be on-site to deliver exams and glasses at no cost to families.
Studies show that nearly 80% of classroom learning is visual, making early detection of eye issues critical. Minor vision impairments can often go undetected and mimic symptoms of ADHD or learning disabilities, leading to misdiagnoses and delayed academic progress.
By bringing mobile eye care directly to children through camps and summer events, Miami Lighthouse is working to remove barriers faced by underserved communities, including financial hardship, limited access to providers, or language challenges.
To date, the Florida Heiken Children’s Vision Program has served over 200,000 students across the state, playing a crucial role in preparing children to return to school equipped for success.
