Scott Barron {BSO}
A man hired as a handyman was arrested and charged with multiple counts of grand theft after allegedly stealing over $60,000 worth of jewelry and valuables from a Coral Springs homeowner he worked for.
According to a Coral Springs Police Department arrest report, Scott Haven Barron, 45, of Sunrise, was taken into custody on July 10 following an investigation into a reported high-value theft.
According to the probable cause affidavit, the victim contacted police on June 30 to report that a large quantity of personal items – including fine jewelry, silverware, binoculars, and a limited-edition Cartier watch – were missing from her home.
The victim also informed the police that, in retrospect, they believed the thefts took place on June 18, when the home’s Wi-Fi was turned off for an hour, disabling the security recordings. Barron, who had been performing handyman services at the victim’s residence, allegedly had full, unsupervised access to the home, including knowledge of the Wi-Fi password and the setup of the surveillance system.
The victim estimated to law enforcement that the total loss of missing items was approximately $62,700. Investigators believe that while some thefts may have occurred on June 18, the thefts actually took place gradually as Barron worked at the victim’s home and went unnoticed until nearly all the items had been taken.
The victim told officers that she suspected Barron after learning he had been arrested on an unrelated narcotics charge on June 26 and had failed to respond to her calls.
During that arrest, Coral Springs officers reportedly discovered three high-end bracelets in Barron’s pants pocket and inside a cigarette box in his vehicle. The jewelry matched the description of items the victim claimed were stolen. A subsequent search of Barron’s personal property at the Broward County Main Jail recovered additional stolen items.
The investigation and recovery of stolen items progressed further when Barron’s father later surrendered a vintage jade pendant, a serpentine chain, and other pieces believed to belong to the victim.
In total, approximately $2,895 worth of stolen goods have been recovered, although the majority of the missing property remains unaccounted for.
Detectives say Barron initially denied stealing the items, claiming he had bought the bracelets from a stranger at Home Depot. He later offered to return more items and admitted to the theft.
Barron was arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail, where he remains held without bond.
