With kennels at capacity and shelters across the nation facing record demand, Broward County Animal Care is partnering with the Bissell Pet Foundation to offer free pet adoptions during a two-week holiday initiative aimed at finding homes for every animal in its care.
Bissell Pet Foundation’s “Empty the Shelters: Holiday Hope” event runs Dec. 1–15, waiving all adoption fees for dogs and cats. The foundation will cover the full cost of adoptions during the promotion, though the county’s standard $25 pet registration fee still applies. Available pets can be viewed at PetAdoptions.Broward.org.
The need for adoptions among shelter dogs and cats remains significant, said Doug Brightwell, director of Broward County Animal Care.
“Empty the Shelters allows us to remove financial barriers while highlighting the incredible pets waiting patiently for a second chance. Every pet adoption signals a life instantly changed. It frees room for the next animal in crisis, strengthens our community, and showcases compassion. If you’ve been thinking about adopting—this is your moment.”
Officials said animals continue arriving daily, leaving the agency overcrowded and in urgent need of adopters. All adopted pets come spayed or neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and ready to go home the same day. Staff will assist families in selecting pets that match their lifestyle, whether they’re looking for a laid-back companion or a high-energy playmate.
The adoption event takes place daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Broward County Animal Care, 2400 SW 42nd Street in Fort Lauderdale.
