The J.P. Taravella High School boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams performed well at the 305 Classic on October 24 in Miami.
The boys’ team earned first place overall, with Craig Dennis taking 10th place and Scardy Fils taking 15th.
The girls’ team finished fourth overall, with Olivia Noel earning eighth place and Valentina Castillo taking 11th.
Coach Dawn Spann said she believes the team’s disappointing performance at the county championship meet motivated the team to try harder. “I believe the team is regaining its confidence and is looking forward to the district meet,” said Spann.
The Trojans will compete at the Pine Crest Last Chance Cross-Country meet on October 30 in Boca Raton, and then will host the district championship meet on November 5 at South County Regional Park in Boca Raton.
Taravella is hosting the meet there because there are no parks in Broward County certified to host an official 5K cross-country race. Markham Park, the site of the county championship, is poorly maintained and not a good location for a competitive race, according to Spann.
The regional meet will take place in Miami on November 12. The state championship will take place in Tallahassee on November 22 at a course that hosts national and international cross-country meets, according to Spann.
The Coral Springs High School and Marjory Stoneman Douglas (MSD) cross-country teams have been running well during the season.
During the October 22 BCAA meet at Tradewinds Park, the Coral Springs boys’ team earned first place, and MSD earned second place. Coral Springs runners Matthew Wykpisz earned second, and Marcus Gentilhomme earned third. Matthew Rosenberg of MSD earned fourth.
The MSD girls’ team won first place, and Olivia Higgins of Coral Springs earned first place. MSD runners Olympia Koumoutsakis took third, Lola Simcox earned fourth, and Alexys Caropreso earned fifth.
