Children battling cancer are taking to the ice in Coral Springs through a program designed to bring fun and normalcy during treatment.
The Chiera Family Foundation’s N.I.C.K.’s Ice Skating program offers six-week learn-to-skate sessions each spring and fall at the Panthers IceDen. The program, now in its sixth year, provides lessons from professional figure skaters for pediatric oncology patients and their siblings.
The learn-to-skate program is funded in part through a grant from the Florida Panthers Foundation and is one of several recreational programs offered by The Chiera Family Foundation to support children and young adults battling cancer.
The nonprofit’s N.I.C.K., or “Nothing’s Impossible for Cancer Kids,” programs are designed to create opportunities for children undergoing treatment to spend time with siblings and friends in a positive environment.
In addition to ice skating, the foundation also hosts N.I.C.K.’s Golf, a learn-to-golf program held in partnership with Topgolf and The First Tee of Broward. The four-week sessions teach golf skills and character-building lessons to children receiving chemotherapy, while also allowing siblings and friends to participate.
The Chiera Family Foundation recently hosted 14 children during its Spring 2026 golf program. The golf initiative has been running for nine years.
Founded 33 years ago, the organization was created in memory of Nicholas Chiera, who died from cancer 37 years ago. In addition to sports programs, the foundation provides college scholarships for cancer survivors and helps send children battling cancer to summer camp.
The foundation’s annual fundraising events will take place on May 17 and 18 at Broken Sound Country Club in Boca Raton. The “Studio 54 Gala” dinner auction is scheduled for May 17, followed by the organization’s annual golf tournament at The Old Course at Broken Sound on May 18.
