Former Florida Senate Democratic Leader Lauren Book announced Wednesday that she is running for Florida Senate District 30, seeking to represent a district that includes Coral Springs, Parkland, and surrounding communities in Broward.
Book launched her campaign shortly after incumbent state Sen. Tina Polsky announced she would not seek reelection in November.
Book said her campaign will focus on affordability, protecting children and families, defending fundamental freedoms, and restoring accountability in Tallahassee.
“Senator Tina Polsky has been an exceptional advocate for our community, and her leadership will be sorely missed,” Book said in a statement announcing her candidacy. “I am committed to continuing the fight to make Florida more affordable for working families and seniors, to keep our children and our community safe, to protect our fundamental freedoms, and to stand up for those who have been silenced or ignored.”
Book served in the Florida Senate from 2016 through 2024, representing Broward County and later serving as Senate Democratic Leader. She is also the founder of Lauren’s Kids, a nonprofit organization focused on preventing child sexual abuse and supporting survivors.
According to her campaign, Book’s legislative record included efforts to strengthen child protection laws, combat human trafficking and online exploitation, expand mental health resources, lower prescription drug costs for seniors, eliminate taxes on baby diapers and adult incontinence products, and expand Medicaid coverage for new mothers and babies. She also helped lead passage of Florida’s bipartisan school safety and gun safety legislation following the 2018 mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland.
Book’s campaign launch drew support from Polsky, Senate Democratic Leader Lori Berman, state Sen. Mack Bernard, and the endorsement of U.S. Rep. Jared Moskowitz.
“Lauren Book has spent her life turning pain into purpose and fighting for people who too often go unheard,” Polsky said in a statement. “She is one of the most compassionate, relentless and effective advocates I have ever had the pleasure of serving with.”
Book previously represented much of the current Senate District 30 before Republican-led redistricting reshaped district boundaries.
The open seat could attract additional Democratic candidates. State Rep. Dan Daley, a Coral Springs Democrat whose House district overlaps much of Senate District 30, has said he is considering a run for the seat.
Book’s campaign noted that, if elected, she would be the only Jewish woman serving in the Florida Senate.
A mother of 9-year-old twins, Book said she is seeking a return to Tallahassee to continue advocating for the communities she previously represented and the issues that have defined her public career.
