A man was arrested for domestic battery and robbery charges after choking his ex-girlfriend after she blocked him on Instagram and refused to answer his calls.
On August 22, Coral Springs Police were dispatched to a delayed domestic battery call at the 8500 block of NW 35th Street. When officers arrived, they encountered the victim who alleged that her ex-boyfriend, James Aiken, 22, of Margate, had assaulted her after days of harassment.
According to the report, the victim had awoken on August 2 to more than 20 missed calls from Aiken. She told police she had recently blocked him on Instagram and blocked a phone number associated with him the night before after an argument.
Aiken was able to reach her from a number she did not recognize and began threatening her, but she did not think anything of it or contact the police at the time. Soon after, however, Aiken arrived at her home, when she came outside and began speaking to him.
The report states that after a brief verbal dispute, the victim said Aiken grabbed her by the throat and pushed her towards his vehicle. She told officers her breathing was restricted to such a point that she believed she would lose consciousness.
According to the victim, Aiken also poured Sprite on her face, broke her cellphone, bit her on her shoulder, and punched her multiple times. Officers viewed multiple injuries consistent with the victim’s claims and interviewed witnesses who backed up her version of the events.
After a further investigation, a warrant was issued for Aiken. On January 2, five months after the crime, Aiken was arrested after a traffic stop for an expired tag. He was taken to the Broward County Main Jail and later released on a $1,000 bond.
