Award-winning Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School alumnus Ben Solmor is choreographing the Lin-Manuel Miranda musical “In The Heights’ at the Sunrise Civic Center.

Solmor, from Coral Springs, graduated from MSD in 2006, and now lives in Delray Beach. He is an award-winning choreographer and professional dancer who was recognized by the New York Post for his performance as DJ Lenny Lizard in the Off-Broadway hit The Boychick Affair.

In 2017, he was diagnosed with Stage 2 chondrosarcoma, a type of bone cancer that develops in cartilage. Solmor’s developed above his right knee. After multiple surgeries and hundreds of hours of physical therapy, he continues to make strides in the South Florida theatre scene. He is currently choreographing Measure for Measure Theatre’s production of In The Heights and is set to choreograph Island City Stage’s production of Altar Boyz in 2020.

Solmor encourages everyone to attend and said the music is very entertaining.

“It’s fun and smart; a blend of classic musical theater infused with hip-hop and Latin/Funk. Music that keeps you on your toes not only to keep up with the story but because you’re probably dancing up a storm in the aisles.”

Marjory Stoneman Douglas Alumnus Choreographs "In The Heights" In the Heights tells the universal story of a vibrant community in Washington Heights, New York- a place where the coffee from the corner bodega is light and sweet, the windows are always open, and the breeze carries the rhythm of three generations of music.

“The connection we’ve created within our own little community will make you want to join in on the fun,” said Solmor.  “You will care for every character. You will root for them. You will be on their side because we have a little something for everyone. Not just in style or appeal but representation.”

Founded in June 2017, Measure for Measure Theatre received a Carbonell Award win and a Silver Palm Award nomination for its inaugural production of “Next to Normal.” Its productions of “35MM: A Musical Exhibition” and “Murder Ballad” opened to rave reviews and sold-out houses. After three years of performing in venues from Boca Raton to Wilton Manors, they begin their first season in residence at the Sunrise Civic Center.

This production runs from Thursday, October 24 through October 27, and November 10, at the Sunrise Civic Center, and showtimes are Thursday-Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m.
