An investigator with the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office was arrested on Jan. 19 for allegedly stealing debit card information from a dead Coral Springs man and $450 from the victim’s account, court records show.
According to Coral Springs Police, Darrell Reid, 38, of Pembroke Pines, also obtained and used or attempted to use credit or debit cards belonging to other dead people. Their investigation into Reid is ongoing.
Reid is currently charged with three counts of criminal use of a dead person’s personal identification and one count of fraudulent use of a credit card. The charges stem from Reid’s allegedly stealing banking information from the dead man during a visit to his apartment in the 9700 block of Westview Drive on Oct. 21, 2023, to investigate the man’s death, police said.
The victim had been dead for around two weeks when police entered his residence. Reid entered the apartment for the purpose of investigating the scene and taking possession of the man’s body, police said.
Days after the man’s death, his daughter began to find fraudulent transactions on his debit card. Police investigated and said they linked Reid to several crimes so far. Reid’s CashApp account allegedly included 25 debit and credit cards as sources for payments, including cards belonging to two other people who recently died in Broward County, according to court records.
Reid’s CashApp account was also linked to the debit card of a man who died in New York City in December 2022, police said. At that time, Reid was working as an investigator for the New York City Medical Examiner’s Office and was assigned to investigate the man’s death, court records show.
Reid resigned from the Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office following his arrest, according to media reports.
Anyone who has information related to the police investigation into Reid or who suspects a deceased relative may have been a victim is asked to email Coral Springs Police Sgt. Brian Koenig at Bkoenig@coralsprings.gov.
