Cornerstone Development in Coral Springs {Coral Springs Talk}
New murals could soon be coming to Coral Springs’ Cornerstone development and art museum.
One of the new murals could be painted at the city’s new Museum of Art. Another could be painted on the north building of the ongoing Cornerstone project, officials said.
According to the agenda for the city’s July 21 Public Art Committee meeting, committee members will decide whether to launch a call for an artist to create the mural at the museum. The museum is part of the Cornerstone development at University Drive and Sample Road.
Members will also weigh whether to commission a mural for the north building of the Cornerstone development, a sprawling project featuring new apartments, retail shopping, restaurants, and public spaces.
The committee’s agenda did not include additional information about either of the proposed murals.
The artwork, if commissioned, would be part of a spate of new public art projects in Coral Springs.
At the Public Art Committee’s previous meeting, on May 19, members reviewed a digital rendering of the bronze sculpture “Wild Connections,” slated for installation at Pride Promoters Park, and voted on the final animal to be included the sculpture.
Commissioned to internationally acclaimed artists Gillie and Marc, the planned sculpture will depict five animals native to Florida seated together on a bench—a symbol of the region’s rich natural beauty and a tool for sparking curiosity and interaction, according to the committee.
During the meeting, an alligator was suggested to replace a bobcat in the artwork. Members also asked the artists to provide a description of what each animal is holding in the sculpture, and why, according to minutes from the meeting.
City staffers will confirm the final design details for the planned sculpture so it can move forward, officials said.
Committee members also approved acceptance of a donated painting, “Goddess of the Springs,” by artist Al Razza, and decided it will be displayed at the Coral Springs Senior Center at Sartory Hall, records show.
