First Church in Coral Springs transformed into a lively depiction of ancient Bethlehem thanks to the efforts of over 348 volunteers, including six young families, who brought the historic town to life for the annual “Bethlehem Revisited” event.
Among the volunteers were Tiffany Ramirez, Francis Eagleston, and their two-month-old daughter Raven, who played the Holy Family in the nativity scene.
Their journey to the event was serendipitous after Tiffany discovered the opportunity while registering her son for soccer.
“We were very honored to be asked to participate in Bethlehem Revisited,” said Francis Eagleston. “This is a good event in the community.”
The event, which relies heavily on volunteers, begins its preparations in late October. Groups gather on Saturday mornings to construct the town and its 16 shops, meticulously researched to provide an accurate representation of ancient Bethlehem.
Janet Brockway, the event coordinator, expressed admiration for the volunteers: “It is amazing to see the generosity and patience of these people who take the time out of their busy schedule to come and participate as part of the cast and crew.”
Long-time volunteers like Richelle Avis, who played the role of a baker in the bread shop, find joy in sharing their faith and being part of this community event.
“The bread shop was a major business in Bethlehem,” he explained. Joanne Avis, also volunteering in the bread shop, echoed her husband’s sentiments.
Adding a touch of realism to the event were the Roman soldiers, led by Mike Wilson.
“We get in a bad mood. Most of the soldiers did not want to be in Bethlehem; they wanted to be in Rome. We are bullies,” Wilson shared with a laugh.
The soldiers’ presence was felt as they patrolled the town, urging people to “Make way for Rome” and enquiring about tax payments.
