Two men suspected of orchestrating a series of mail thefts in the Coral Springs area have been arrested after a victim caught them in the act, leading to a high-speed chase on the Sawgrass Expressway. The pursuit ended when the suspect’s vehicle crashed, prompting a foot chase that resulted in their arrest.
On February 18, the Coral Springs Police Department responded to reports of a burglary in progress at a commercial property. Two suspects, later identified as Ulrick Brooks, 29, of North Lauderdale, and Jordan Pierre, 28, of North Lauderdale, were allegedly attempting to steal mail from a secured pedestal-style mailbox.
According to the report, Brooks was the primary mailbox thief in the scheme, while Pierre was the getaway driver.
According to a victim in the case, Brooks was observed at the mailbox dressed in a full U.S. Postal Service mail carrier uniform, a wide-brimmed straw hat, a surgical mask, and a USPS satchel bag – the typical outfit for a walking carrier, but not a delivery person. He also knows his usual USPS delivery person, and Brooks was that him.
The victim – who claimed to have lost multiple checks via past mail robberies – told CSPD he was inside his office at the time and noticed Brooks utilizing a key on a retractable lanyard to access the front panel of the mailbox. Recognizing Brooks from past security footage of mail theft incidents, the victim told CSPD he immediately confronted him before any mail could be removed.
The report shows the victim ordered Brooks to the ground, prompting him to discard the key, satchel, and hat. The victim stated in the report that he witnessed him communicating through wireless airpods while he confronted Brooks, which made him believe an accomplice nearby, leading to him letting him get back up to his feet.
Brooks quickly fled on foot across the street and entered the passenger side of a waiting black vehicle, later determined to be operated by Pierre. Surveillance footage later confirmed Pierre’s role in the crime.
Determined to prevent the suspects from getting away, the victim pursued the fleeing vehicle in his truck. The suspect vehicle entered the Sawgrass Expressway heading south, where the victim temporarily lost sight of it. However, a few miles later, he caught up again as the suspect’s vehicle was seen struggling with a blown-out tire.
The vehicle exited the expressway onto Commercial Boulevard in Sunrise, where it ultimately spun out and became disabled under the overpass. Both Brooks and Pierre abandoned the car and fled on foot towards Tamarac, with one of the suspects seen carrying a blue bag.
The CSPD report indicated officers were able to track the suspects as they jumped a fence onto the Hampton Inn’s property in Tamarac. Law enforcement officers arrived at the scene shortly thereafter and took them into custody near the 5700 block of Madison Avenue in Tamarac.
Upon a search of the area, officers found a blue bag containing mail articles in a trash can between the Hampton Inn and a neighboring Woodspring Suites. Scattered articles of unopened mail were also found on the ground near the trash can.
Brooks and Pierre were arrested and transported to the Broward County Main Jail. They were later released after posting a $6,000 bond.
The Coral Springs Police Department continues investigating the case, including any connections to additional mail theft incidents in the city. Following the duo’s arrest, USPS officials confirmed neither is an employee of USPS.
