A state inspector ordered the immediate closure of the Sbarro restaurant at Coral Square Mall on Monday after discovering a roach infestation.
According to inspection reports, inspectors discovered seven violations, including live and dead roaches, in various restaurant areas. Inspectors reportedly observed live roaches next to the hand sink at the front counter, in the back prep area near a floor drain, and in the office area.
Dead roaches were discovered in multiple locations.
The violations also included issues with temperature control for safe food. Items such as pasta salad, garbanzo bean salad with cut tomatoes, and cucumber tomato salad were found to be held at temperatures warmer than the safe 41 degrees.
The operator could not determine how long the food had been in the unit, resulting in a stop-sale order.
Further infractions included the expiration of the food manager’s certification and the required employee training for all staff members.
Following the initial closure on July 15, the inspector conducted follow-up inspections on July 16 and July 17. During these visits, additional dead roaches were found.
As of Wednesday, Sbarro was allowed to re-open after clearing the inspection process.
