Coral Springs Charter boys’ volleyball made history, with their four players officially committing to playing in college, a baseball player committing, and a Hall of Fame induction.
Jalen McGregor, Aadhith Aranhcherry, and James Camacho will attend Warner University in Lake Wales, while Sergio Mejia Monnar will play at King University in Tennessee. The Panthers had a spectacular season, winning 14 games and a District Title before falling to Coral Springs High School in Regionals.
McGregor led the team in hitting percentage and was third with 110 kills. He had 75 blocks, while Arahcherry had 361 assists and 93 digs. He also recorded 24 aces. Camacho finished second on the team in service-receives. Mejia Monnar dominated with 195 kills, 21 more than any Panthers this year. He also finished second on the team in assists and fourth in blocks. Arancherry and Mejia Monnar each played in the BCAA All-Star Game.
In college, McGregor, Aranhcherry and Camcho will join a team that won eight matches a season ago while King University won seven. For the CSC volleyball players, seven seniors graduated, but they will return several key players next year, looking to repeat as District Champions.
In baseball, Marcelo Young announced his commitment to Florida International University.
“I am extremely excited to announce that I will be furthering my academic and athletic career at FIU,” Young said. I would like to thank all my friends, family, and coaches for believing in me and motivating me to be the best person I can be on and off the field.”
Young started playing baseball when he was seven and has played for Margate Legacy, Inferno, Ballers, Giants, Bandits before starting with the Pokers. He went 4-0 last season with the Panthers as a junior, pitching to an era of 4.05. Young made three starts and threw one complete game while striking out 32 hitters in 36.1 innings. CSC went 15-11 and reached Regionals before falling in the opening round against the eventual State Champions, North Broward Prep.
For college, Young said he went to a camp at FIU and loved the baseball field. He followed that up with a tour and made his decision. Young will have one more year on the varsity team before heading to FIU and will play for coach Alvaro Gomez, who is in his first year at CSC. Following that, Young will play for a team that competes in Conference USA and has been to the NCAA Tournament 11 times. They went 27-30 this past season but have had 137 players selected in the MLB Draft.
Former NFL safety and Coral Springs Charter graduate Darius Butler will be inducted into the Broward County Sports Hall of Fame.
Butler, a 2004 graduate of CSC, was a two-sport star. He played football and scored over 1,000 points during his varsity basketball career. Before playing college football at the University of Connecticut, he was an All-County selection and an All-State Honorable Mention.
Butler was selected in the second round of the 2009 NFL Draft. He played nine years in the NFL with the New England Patriots, Carolina Panthers, and Los Angeles Chargers, where he recorded 33 tackles and four interceptions at safety. Butler will be inducted on October 18.
