Broward Health Coral Springs will unveil a memorial statue Tuesday in memory of the victims and survivors of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School mass shooting, the hospital announced Monday.
“Spirit of Caring,” a statue commissioned to memorialize the lives of the 17 people killed in the February 14, 2018 attack, as well as those who survived, will be unveiled at 9 a.m. Tuesday, March 29, at Broward Health Coral Springs, 3000 Coral Hills Drive, in Coral Springs.
Seventeen surviving victims were treated by Broward Health Medical Center and Broward Health North doctors and nurses.
According to the hospital, the sculpture by artist Stephen Canneto seeks to ensure the memory of those lost and the well-being of those affected are forever cherished.
In his artist’s bio, Canneto said his passion for creating public art began in the summer of 1967 as a volunteer in the Israeli Army.
“Call it a quirk of fate or destiny,” the sculptor wrote. “I was invited by a Non-Governmental-Organization to create a memorial for victims of the 6 Day War. For that first commission, I met with the survivors, listened to their stories, and traversed the battlefields where their young people fell. I learned how creating art was a healing process: for individuals, families, and communities–and myself.”
Guests attending Tuesday’s unveiling event are asked to gather at the facility’s Emergency Department entrance.
Among those in attendance will be Annika Dworet, a former nurse at Broward Health Coral Springs, who will talk about her son, Nick, who was killed in the MSD shooting.
The sculptor, Canneto, will also attend, as will vocalist Angelina Kennedy, who will perform for attendees.
According to the hospital, unspecified dignitaries and representatives from state and local municipalities will also attend.
