A Sonic Drive-In in Coral Springs was shut down for the second time since November after a complaint-triggered inspection uncovered numerous violations, including moldy food, insect infestations, and widespread sanitation issues.
According to inspection reports, on December 27, the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation discovered 17 health code violations at the Sonic at 6200 West Sample Road.
Among the violations was food contamination, including lemons and limes with mold-like growth and dead flies found in the ice cream mix, which led to stop-sale orders. Inspectors also noted food temperature issues across multiple food items.
Inspectors also found live flies in the kitchen area, and the interior of the ice machine and ice bin contained an accumulation of black and green mold-like substances, which reportedly prompted immediate food safety concerns.
The findings also heavily mentioned the state of Sonic’s sanitation, with soiled floors and walls, food debris, and grease accumulation behind equipment and along prep tables, all noted as concerns. Mold-like substances were also found on the ceiling of the walk-in cooler, and discarded drinks and plastic waste were found scattered on the cooler floor.
The report also noted that surfaces throughout the kitchen were dirty, with old food residue on prep tables, syrup on the ice cream machine, and grease on the expo line.
The inspection highlights that the closure and repeated issues signal a lack of managerial oversight, further evidenced by reports that there was no proof of food manager certification for the individual in charge.
Sonic was ordered to undergo follow-up inspections that would reveal if they have remedied the issues before the restaurant can reopen.
