The Namu in Coral Springs is consistently the best Asian restaurant in the area. Offering up Korean and Japanese cuisine (with some crossover fusion items), it’s always close to a full house for good reason.
The full name is Namu: Korean Japanese Kitchen and Izakaya. Izakaya is “a type of Japanese bar in which a variety of small, typically inexpensive dishes and snacks are served to accompany the alcoholic drinks.”
They definitely achieve that vibe, albeit on a larger scale. The sake and soju have all sorts of variations and fruit-infused flavors and are crisp and excellent.
The food, though, is something else.
Every time we go, we order new things, but some dishes bear repeating. The Fried Korean Dumplings ($12) from the Izakaya part of the menu are superb. Pan-seared perfectly crispy on the outside, moist beef bulgogi on the inside, and a soy chili oil sauce for dipping.
The baked corn cheese ($8) is the best I’ve ever had. It’s creamy, the sweetness isn’t overdone, and the cheese is appropriately gooey and browned. I’m unsure what the cream is, but it’s highly addictive.
The galbi ($29) was Korean short ribs marinated in this wonderful fruit BBQ sauce. I’ve never experienced BBQ sauce with that flavor before. The ribs retained their smokiness and char yet pulled off the bone in a very satisfying way. It had a tiny bit of enjoyable heat. The onions underneath and side of white rice were a bit plain and dry, but this is how galbi is traditionally served to stay as the dish’s centerpiece.
The donburi with hot pot ($17) was also fantastic. It has rice topped with stir-fried glass noodles and lettuce, and my wife chose beef bulgogi as the protein. The glass noodles are soft and firm and pair perfectly with the tender meat soaked in the beef broth. Add some bok choy, onions, carrots, and mushrooms, and the dish is filling with a myriad of earthy and sweet flavors.
We also tried the Kobe Beef Broth Ramen ($17). The ingredients, such as the bamboo shoot and seaweed, were quality, but standard. The broth felt like it should have had a bolder, richer flavor but tasted similar to most broths. Of course, there’s nothing wrong with it, but Kobe beef is widely regarded as a superior cut, so maybe our expectations were a bit high.
We should have left room for dessert, but as usual, the dinner was so outrageously good and filling that we overate there yet again.
