South Florida music fans are in for a night of classic rock as Yellow Brick Joel brings the spirit of two legendary performers to the stage at the Coral Springs Center for the Arts on Friday, February 27.
The concert features veteran singer and pianist David Clark, a Long Island, New York, native whose career has been shaped by a lifelong devotion to Billy Joel’s music.
Clark’s musicianship and vocals have made him one of the most respected Joel tribute performers in the country.
“I discovered Billy Joel when I was 10 years old,” Clark told Coral Springs Talk. “It was 1977, The Stranger had been released, and the song ‘Just the Way You Are’ had come out. I was already taking piano lessons, but this music immediately became a huge influence on my approach to the piano and molded the kind of musician I wanted to be.”
That influence led Clark to decades of live performances throughout the Long Island and New York music scenes. Since 1985, he has built a reputation as a skilled piano player, powerful vocalist, and engaging entertainer at both private events and large-scale concerts.
In Yellow Brick Joel, Clark teams up with Bill Connors, who portrays Elton John, paying tribute to the iconic Elton John–Billy Joel “Face to Face” tours of the 1990s and early 2000s.
“Bill Connors and I both understand the assignment,” Clark said. “We were fans of those tours when they happened. We open the show together, then do a few songs on our own. After intermission, we both come out for a full-out ‘Face to Face’ rock and roll show while singing parts of each other’s songs. It’s a very high-energy second act.”
The tribute show balances chart-topping hits with select fan favorites, carefully curated to keep the experience accessible while still rewarding longtime fans. Guests can expect a hit-packed celebration featuring favorites such as “I’m Still Standing,” “Rocket Man,” “Bennie and the Jets,” “Piano Man,” “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me,” and “You May Be Right.”
“We’re deep fans of the source material,” Clark said. “We’d love to include more deep cuts like ‘Captain Jack’ or Elton songs like ‘Funeral for a Friend,’ and we do perform them from time to time. But the audience should be respected; we want this to be a hit-friendly experience.
Clark said the chemistry between performers is essential to the show’s authenticity.
“We have lots of interplay up there,” he said. “I bring that NY/NJ swagger, right down to the Long Island accent and being an occasional wiseguy. But it’s important not to insult the audience by pretending we’re the real guys. This isn’t an impersonator show. The key is to play and sing great, be funny, and invite the audience to sing along and laugh with us.”
For fans who may never have seen Billy Joel or Elton John live, Clark hopes the performance captures the feeling of those original concerts.
“With Elton retired and Billy winding down as he battles health issues, there’s less likelihood fans will see the real thing again,” Clark said. “We hope to bring that energy, spirit, and experience to audiences who never had that chance.”
Clark, who lives in New Jersey with his wife, smooth jazz trumpet artist Cindy Bradley, and their five dogs, said the Coral Springs stop is one the band looks forward to.
“We love coming down there,” he said. “Last year’s show was a huge success. We take the music seriously without taking ourselves too seriously. It’s a high-content, fun show.”
