A woman with a long history of shoplifting was arrested for petty theft at a Coral Springs Walmart after attempting to leave the store with a shopping cart full of items she had not paid for.
Jessica Stacey Layne, 24, of Coconut Creek, was arrested on June 16 at the 6001 Coral Ridge Drive Walmart for second-degree petty theft, and a subsequent parole violation.
Walmart employees observed her attempting to leave the store with unpaid items she had placed in shopping bags inside her shopping cart.
The Coral Springs Police Department responded to the call about a shoplifting incident in progress at 4:28 p.m. When officers arrived, employees informed them that they observed Layne placing a large amount of various cosmetics items into grocery bags that were later placed inside her shopping cart. The bags also contained grocery items that were unpaid for.
According to the report, Layne bypassed all registers and attempted to exit the store with the bags she had filled. She was stopped by employees who discovered merchandise worth $649.12.
Upon arresting Layne, officers discovered she previously was arrested for petty theft, making the current incident a felony. Officers also found that she was on probation for a drug charge.
Layne was placed under arrest and transported to CSPD for booking, where she was later transferred to the Broward County jail.
