A man is behind bars, thanks to an astute Walmart employee recognizing him from his photo hanging in the store.
On July 29 at 8:15 p.m., Matthew Carroll, 35, of Coconut Creek, was identified by a Walmart customer service representative at 6001 Coral Ridge Drive, by a photo hanging in the store because he had a history of stealing from that location.
The customer service representative also noticed the receipt Carroll produced for a flat-screen television on his phone didn’t have the proper information, and store security was notified.
It was at this time, Carroll abandoned the television and fled the store.
When Coral Springs Police arrived, Carroll was seen leaving the Walmart in the passenger seat of a Blue Scion Crossover. He was pulled over just outside the parking lot on Holmberg Road.
Carroll had a history of stealing from Walmart and was identified by a picture of himself put up to keep employees on the lookout.
Police used CCTV video from Walmart, as well as the photo of Carroll at the store, to positively identify him. The vehicle he attempted to flee in was also allegedly used in previous thefts at the Walmart.
According to the police report, the driver of the Blue Scion, Daisy Nin, had warrants for three counts of false ownership of property and one count of petit theft and was also taken into custody.
CSPD found that Carroll had an open petit theft case from an arrest in June as well as several adjudications withheld for robbery and grand theft in Broward County.
